A collection of letters most of which are addressed to James Smith, critic for the Melbourne "Argus" relating to the development of the theatre in Australia. Correspondents include George Coppin, Gustavus Brooke and J.C. Williamson. Also included are a book of programmes of the Bijou Theatre, a notebook of James Smith's and a book of newspaper clippings. Also includes a scrapbook of letters, and a copy of "Wilton and its associations" (1851) signed and annotated by Smith. There is a letter pasted in the front from Elizabeth Herbert (to whom the book is dedicated).

Smith was a journalist for the Argus and arrived in Melbourne in 1852. He joined the Argus in 1856 and, after retiring in 1898, became a literary critic for the Age.
